Also, with all that family visiting from out of town, come on down to the Pearl District, shop, eat, stroll, go to Powell’s Books; it’s a great way to spend a day with your family.

I learned about them from one of our regular customers who is involved in their work. It is an incredible organization that uses unique methods of long term partnership to support children with financial need who want to pursue higher education. 

A bit about them from their web site:

Marathon Education Partners strives to provide encouragement, guidance, and a higher education scholarship opportunity to children with financial need. Our program matches individuals and families (Partners) who want to give back to their communities by sharing their experience and knowledge with children (Scholars) through the crucial stages of their educational development.

Since Marathon’s founding on September 11, 2002 through March 2008, 90 Partners have joined together to help 54 children in the Portland, Vancouver and Pendleton schools reach their goal of obtaining higher education.”

This week, the organization is The Portland Children’s Museum and we couldn’t be happier! Some of our fondest memories have been going there as children and taking our nieces and nephews there, too. It is a magical place that is near and dear to our hearts.

This week our beneficiary is SMYRC 

A bit about them from their website:

Since 1998 SMYRC has created safety and support for LGBTQQ youth in Oregon, through youth empowerment, community building, education and direct services.

SMYRC is a program of non-profit Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare, Oregon’s largest provider of community-based mental health and addictions treatment services.

SMYRC provides a safe, supervised, harassment-free, and alcohol- and drug-free space for sexual minority youth 23 and younger. Youth gather to participate in positive activities like art, music, community organizing, youth development, education, peer support, support groups, case management, counseling, and job readiness preparation.

SMYRC provides the only drop-in resource center for sexual minority youth in Oregon.

How can you help? There are lots of ways:

3 Benefit Days This Week! September 19, 2009

There are THREE different days this week where we are giving you the opportunity to do some good for organizations that are very special to us.

One is our traditional “Benefit Day” and the other two are part of nationwide fundraising efforts. Here’s the summary.

Monday, September 21, 2009

World Alzheimer’s Day – The Alzheimer’s Association is near and dear to my heart as my stepfather suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease. Monday is World Alzheimer’s Day and the Association is encouraging people to “go purple” on Monday by wearing purple to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s. We are doing a special cupcake on Monday called “Virgil’s Purple” in honor of my stepfather. It is our White Chocolate Marionberry Cupcake which has a lovely light purple marion berry icing. 

We will be donating 50% of our sales of “Virgil’s Purple” cupcake to the Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon for one day only, Monday September 21

Tuesday September 22, 2009

American Cancer Society – Another extremely important organization that tugs at my heart, having lost a few family members to cancer, too. Our traditional benefit day, we will donate 5% of ALL sales this day to the American Cancer Society.

Friday September 25, 2009

Cupcake Mission – We join other bakeries across the country in donating a portion of our proceeds on Friday to the Michael J. Fox foundation, whose mission is to raise awareness and money for Parkinson’s Disease research. My mother has been living with Parkinson’s Disease for over 15 years and fights a courageous struggle; she’s my hero! And she’s super cute. Here is is with my equally adorable husband.

It’s easy, just call ahead (if you can and your order is for more than a dozen) or stop in and pick up cupcakes on the day you’d like to support.
